Senior Pictures | The Process

Senior Pictures | The Process

This is what your Senior Photo Shoot will look like…

Our process starts with listening.  We’ll have a few questions for you, but we really want to know what you are looking for in Senior pictures.  These photos should be unique to every Senior, so we’ll ask things like what your fashion style is, what you like and don’t like in your friends Senior pictures, and what you will use your pictures for. All of those things will come together to help you choose a date/time/location and help us create the perfect Senior pictures for you!

After that happens, we will email you an invoice and contract for our sitting fee that you can pay and sign online. Once your invoice is paid, and your contract is signed, your date and time are secured.

Now that you are on our schedule, we’ll send you a few emails to help you prepare for your session.  Things like “What to wear” and “What to bring” are common questions, so we’ve put together a few articles that will help with the common questions.  If at any time you have other questions for us, we’re always happy to hear from you and help you be prepared for this incredible experience.

On the day of your shoot, we will meet at the chosen location, and review your wardrobe selections with you.  Once we have a first outfit and our initial location it will be time to get started creating some unbelievable images! We wander around that area for a while.  You will be surprised at how many different scenes we can create in one location!   If we need to, we may pack up and head to a second site.  You’ll also have multiple wardrobe changes to vary your looks as we go. I don’t put a time limit on the shoot but will stop once we get everything we need or once it is obvious that you are worn out! (With Senior girls this is typically between the 90 minute and 2-hour mark.)

This is going to be an unforgettable experience!  Our goal is to make you feel like a fashion model for a day, so you can plan on lots of posing direction, what to do with your hands, and lots and lots of primping to be sure everything is perfectly in place!

About two weeks after your shoot, we will have you and both of your parents/guardians, if they are available, come into the studio where we will watch a slideshow of all your pictures from that day.  This can all be a little emotional, but we’ll be right there to help you decide how you’d like to preserve these beautiful milestone images! This is also a great time to get your hands on all our products. We sell a range of items from gift prints for your Aunts and Uncles, to mobile apps so you can show off these amazing pictures to your friends.  Our focus, though, is on albums and wall art.  Whether it’s classic canvas, modern metal, or our stunning acrylics we just love to see these images hanging on the walls of your home. We only sell the best quality products, so you know these portraits will last a lifetime! In fact, if you’ll send us a picture of some of the walls in your home, I can show you what the different pictures and products would like on very own your walls!  This image reveal and ordering session will be your one opportunity to purchase a collection of images at a discount.  After the reveal, we are only able to offer our products a la carte. To give you an idea of our pricing, 8×10 gift prints are $50 and heavily discounted collections start at 749.

About 4-6 weeks later, you will have your ordered products in your hands and ready to share with your friends and family.

Do you have any questions about our process?  If so, we always welcome clients to reach out and ask.  Our number one source of clients is existing client referrals, so we want to do everything we can to be sure that you have both incredible images and an amazing story to tell your friends about your experience with us.

We can’t wait to work with you!

What The Shoot Will Look Like

We know going into your senior shoot can be incredibly nerve wracking. So here is a quick outline of what the shoot will look like, so that you know exactly what you are walking into!!

We will meet at the location we decided would work best for you. First, we will go through all the outfits you brought! (You are bringing TONS of outfits, right?!?!)  We’ll talk about which ones are the must haves, and which ones just have YOU written all over them.  This will help me guide you through the session and coordinate which outfit will look best for each different spot we chose! During this time, my assistant will be unpacking our gear, getting the lighting rig set up, and making sure that everything is ready to go when we start shooting. Together, we’ll choose which outfit to start with, based on the scenery around us, and jump right into taking your pictures!

Don’t worry.  We understand that you aren’t a professional model.  Part of our job is to make your look fantastic!  So, every time we move spots (even if its just a few steps away), and every time you change outfits, I will repose you. Don’t stress about posing, this is literally MY JOB! I have studied posing under some of the biggest names in the industry for years to make sure I know how to position your body to flatter you most.  There will be poses you feel like are incredibly awkward, but trust me on this, your final images will look amazing!

We will constantly be checking hair, to make sure you don’t have any fly away hairs, or any hair that are going to cause any distractions in the final picture. For example, you don’t want your long blonde hair to look like it’s coming out of your armpit, right?  That’s the kind of thing we’re always on the lookout for. We’ll also make sure your clothes are laying properly, nothings bunched up, bra straps aren’t showing etc.  These details will make all the difference in the world, when you finally get to see your Senior portraits.

We will move throughout the location to find unique backgrounds to fit your style. Don’t underestimate how many fun backgrounds we can get in a small area. Many times, if we are in an urban location, one or two blocks will provide enough different looks for the entire shoot.  It might feel like everything is going to look the same, but a tiny change in perspective can completely change and image.

As mentioned before, we’ll be doing lots of wardrobe changes as well.  Sometimes just adding a jacket or hair accessory can completely change the mood of a picture.  Other timed, we’ll ask you to go from jeans and a t-shirt into a formal gown.  If we’re shooting near our studio on the square in Noblesville, that will be a perfect place to change.  In some locations, we’ll be able to find a restaurant, boutique, or other place where you’ll be able to change.  Other times, you’ll need to be able to change in your car, if that’s something you are comfortable with.  If not, just let us know, and we’ll work around it.

As your shoot continues, you’ll start to see some patterns.  We’ll introduce you to ‘flow posing’ where we’ll give you a few instructions, and you’ll just start shifting from one expression to another, one pose to the next.  Before you know it, you’ll be modeling like a pro, but we’ll be right there with you.  You’ll never feel like you are alone in this, or you don’t know what to do!

Our high fashion photo sessions are lots of fun, but they can also be exhausting!  If you feel like you need a break, just let us know.  Modeling is fun and exciting, but it’s a lot of work, too!  We’ll do our best to keep you in the shade, but don’t ever feel like you can’t tell us that we need to slow down, or pause for few minutes.

Senior Influencer Team | Class of 2021 | The Studio Kate

Our Senior Influencer Team is a group of girls that serve as representatives of The Studio Kate. We work to create images that capture the personality, character and physique of a high school senior! Creating a team of girls who help represent my business and brand, The Studio Kate Senior Influencer Team, is one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE things to do within my business.

For me it’s much less about the business or even taking the pictures, and more about building relationships with these girls on my team! The process starts with a call-out for high school juniors who want to take part in our team for their senior year. These girls walk through an application process on our website. They then schedule appointments for a face to face interview with me. At this interview, we chat about everything from their personality to their favorite color to their family life, etc. I spent DAYS at Noble Coffee and Tea interviewing these applicants. Looking for charismatic girls from different friend circles, who would respectfully represent my business and who wanted to build friendships with the other applicants chosen.

We had nearly 30 girls apply this year. All of them I truly would have loved to place on the team. After lots of consideration, I narrowed it down to 10 girls who I would love to introduce to you! We haven’t done a shoot yet, but I am so excited to get to know these girls and create amazing images with them, and even more amazing friendships.

Senior Portraits with Hamilton South Eastern High School’s – Stephanie

Senior portraits are very important when you are as involved in your senior year of high school as Stephenie is.  This girl participates in more organizations at HSE than anyone we know.  We were thrilled to have her as a part of our Senior Influencer Team for the class of 2020.  Even though Steph calls Noblesville home, for her Senior Fashion Shoot, we headed over to Coxhall Gardens in Carmel at her request.  There are a few well know features here.  There’s a beautiful bell tower, a bridge overlooking some water, and of course, the amphitheater.   We got a few shots in each of these places, but this wasn’t our first time here, so we had a few other ideas up our sleeve.

First off was the parking lot.  OK, not actually the parking lot, but right along its edge, there’s a great wrought iron fence that made for some perfect leading lines with lots of shade. Professional photographers LOVE shade.   When you think about a perfect day for outdoor Portraits most seniors think about a bright and sunny summer day.  But any lover of photography will tell you that a fully overcast day is far more beautiful to us.  In any case, we shot a few there in the shade then walked over toward the barn.  Have you seen this big, red, old school barn?  It’s an amazing backdrop for senior portraits! She changed into something a little more casual/country, and you would have thought we were shooting the album cover for female country music artist of the year.  We captured some great pictures around the old barn, the hand pump over the well, and even back by the grain silo.

As Steph and her mom started to walk back to the car, there was a ray of light that hit this girl square in the head.  We stopped her in her tracks, shifted our position and fill lighting, and caught an unforgettable moment of her in some tall grass while the sun created the perfect glow for her hair.

At that point, I knew we had what we needed.  But before we headed back to the “safe zone” (where every other photographer shoots the same pictures), we made one more stop.  There’s a small building in the park.  That day there was a wedding going on, so we didn’t want to interrupt, but we did sneak a few portraits of Steph in the entryway wearing a pink dress, blue suede heels, and a big floppy hat.  Once again, you would have thought we had a trained model posing for us.

We always cringe a little when we hear a student or a parent tell us they want to have their senior portraits made in the same old place as all their friends.  But the challenge of creating fresh and unique images that are as different as every kid we shoot is part of what makes it so great to be a senior photographer in Noblesville, Indiana.
