Katie’s Senior Photo Shoot

*Warning these pictures might invoke uncontrollable laughter*

My senior photoshoots have always been more to me about creating an experience these kids will hold onto for years, than just about taking pictures. My own senior photoshoot experience played a huge role in the photographer that I have become. It was just a few years ago 😉 that I experienced having my senior pictures taken.

As I drove to Broadripple, I quickly realized that the anticipation of my senior pictures had mounted since my 8th grade year at Hamilton Southeastern.  A few years before, my sister Megan, had her pictures done by “The Photographer” everyone who cared about their pictures used, and a few years before that my oldest sister, Kari, had them done by the same photographer! And I just couldn’t wait to see what creative ideas this photographer had for my pictures!

I remember driving down the entire time, wondering if I brought enough outfits. Did my hair still look good? Would my makeup fade before I even got my first picture taken? What if my pictures just didn’t turn out as good as my sisters!? Oh, the thoughts that crossed my mind!

Andrew Scalini was the photographer that any kid in the Indianapolis area dreamed of having their pictures taken by. I was lucky enough to get to. He was ahead of his time in style, and creative beyond the mind can comprehend.

I remember walking into his studio, slowly opening the door and just standing in awe. I was immediately drawn in to the art on the walls. And by art, I mean photos Scalini had taken himself. They were smooth, but edgy. Perfectly posed but not too posed. His angles were that of an artist. He told a story with each picture.

And then there he was, Scalini. The man I had idolized for years now, was shaking my hand (well the best he could with the layers of clothes hanging over my arms). His studio was upstairs, so we walked upstairs to where we would do the indoor portion of the shoot. I was simply in awe of this studio.

The setup of different backgrounds encompassed me. But they weren’t like other photographers with those faux backgrounds that were supposed to look like you were in the woods or some fairytale setting. His backgrounds were something that you knew were produced by a creative mind.

There was a tin wall that made from material typically used for roofing. A black wire piece that was grid shaped, and when he would shine a gelled light on it that would produce the same pattern on the wall plus the color from the gel.

He was a creative genius with all he did. He had a white wall that he used to take pictures of his clients on, and the contrast of dark brown hair was beautiful. (I know you can’t believe the current blond isn’t real, huh?) He would produce matte pictures with them instead of using the typical glossy finish and this was one genius way his photographs stood out from the million other photographers in the area.

After we finished in the studio, we took a drive to a local park to get some outdoor shots.  As we were driving he suddenly slammed on the brakes pulling off the road.  My mind began to race trying to figure out if something was wrong with the car or if Scalini was having some type of medical issue! But I quickly realized to my right there was a huge field of Black Eyed Susans that caught his eye as the perfect setting for a picture. To this day it is still my favorite senior picture of myself. It may be because I’m in the overalls I lived in while in high school, but I think it’s because of this great memory I have that is connected to that picture and that field. I don’t know Broad Ripple well, but one place I can get you to is that field.

Scalini had the reputation of being the “expensive” photographer in our area. But he proved over and over, with my sisters, and with me that he was worth spending every penny. He didn’t just create pictures, he created memories that I will hold close forever.  Andrew Scalini, thank you for helping me understand that I can create valuable memories for my clients. What seemed expensive at the time, will forever remain priceless to me.

Senior Influencer Team | Class of 2021 | The Studio Kate

Our Senior Influencer Team is a group of girls that serve as representatives of The Studio Kate. We work to create images that capture the personality, character and physique of a high school senior! Creating a team of girls who help represent my business and brand, The Studio Kate Senior Influencer Team, is one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE things to do within my business.

For me it’s much less about the business or even taking the pictures, and more about building relationships with these girls on my team! The process starts with a call-out for high school juniors who want to take part in our team for their senior year. These girls walk through an application process on our website. They then schedule appointments for a face to face interview with me. At this interview, we chat about everything from their personality to their favorite color to their family life, etc. I spent DAYS at Noble Coffee and Tea interviewing these applicants. Looking for charismatic girls from different friend circles, who would respectfully represent my business and who wanted to build friendships with the other applicants chosen.

We had nearly 30 girls apply this year. All of them I truly would have loved to place on the team. After lots of consideration, I narrowed it down to 10 girls who I would love to introduce to you! We haven’t done a shoot yet, but I am so excited to get to know these girls and create amazing images with them, and even more amazing friendships.

Senior Photos with Noblesville High School Tennis Player – Sarah

Senior photos were not at the top of Sarah’s mind as she was entering her twelfth year of high school.  But a friend of a friend reached out to tell us that she would be a perfect girl for our senior model team.  Sarah was a little shy coming into our first group shoot.  I can only imagine that growing up being the only red head and the tallest girl in her class created some would make anyone a little self-conscious of their appearance, but in the world of photography those are the exact things that super models are made of.

It wasn’t long before her natural leadership kicked in, and the other influencers were looking to her for advice.  She is always helpful, incredibly thoughtful, and her smile is more than just a little contagious.  From the moment Rachel started hair and makeup with her, it was one giggle after another.  Since we were already in the studio in downtown Noblesville, we decided to click a few frames in the parking lot right behind Alexanders on the square.  The way the white paint had fallen off that century old brick wall is the kind of things most photographers have to fake with printed paper backdrops or using Photoshop compositing techniques.  All we needed to do was use our portable strobes and a soft box to add a touch of fill light to her face, and it instantly created the kind of portrait that you would find in a fashion magazine.

We continued on to the pedestrian bridge that leads to Forest Park.  Just like before, Sarah’s smile took center stage and made this photo session a joy for everyone.  A clothing change and a quick drive later, we found this beautiful open space with tall grass and an amazing tree line.  We dropped this beautiful blue velvet chair in the middle of the field, setup a light or two, and got right back to our senior session as it quickly turned to golden hour.

As part of our Senior Influencer Team, we had the privilege to create dozens of amazing senior photos with Sarah. In addition to her primary fashion shoot and the multiple group shoots, were even able to do a photo session on her home tennis court at Noblesville High School.

While there is no way that we could take credit for all of the growth that Sarah has done over her senior year in high school, her mother made a point to tell us that our Senior Model program was exactly what she needed to create a whole new level of confidence in herself.  In fact, the biggest issue that her mom had with the incredible senior photos that we created together, was that she didn’t know about us when Sarah’s older sister graduated  a couple of years ago, and that her sister is going to be more than a little jealous!

Senior Pictures with Shelby

Shelby is in the senior class of 2020 here at Noblesville High School.  We’ve had a few great sessions with her, but I think our favorite was the fashion shoot we did with her around the town square in downtown Noblesville.  This girl has a very classy sense of style.  One outfit in particular was light a flowy and seemed to catch every breeze that passed by.  That little bit of motion can make a world of difference in bringing life to a photograph.  On this perfectly overcast day we decided to shoot just south of the square, around Nickel Plate Arts, at the corner of 8th street and Maple Avenue.  It’s really just a couple of old houses that have been turned into a creative place for artists, but it was the perfect backdrop to create an image of this girl.  A brick wall, a wood railing, an old wrap around porch and a cobblestone path was really all we had to work with.  But these were the perfect compliment to Shelby’s classic sense of style.  In one image she is leaning against the wooden railing, with her arms propped up on the posts.  Her sleeves fell free looking a bit like angel wings as she gazed into the sky with this incredible genuine smile. It’s far from the kind of seniors photos she’ll find in her yearbook.

As one of our senior influencers, she always brings a burst of energy into our group shoot sessions.  Shelby showed up early to our school bus shoot so that we could get some county style pictures in addition to the urban images we had already created.  In her black jeans and red gingham top, she looked like she belonged in the country against that old rusty fence.  She turned that smile on like a light switch, and made our job of creating beautiful images of her so very easy.  She climbed a tree, hopped up on the old concrete pillar, and didn’t mind getting down in the weeds at all, so that we could create a little texture in the foreground.  If this has been our only encounter with her, I would have pegged her as a total tom-boy or at least farm-girl.  But fifteen minutes later, she had changed into her Noblesville High School cheerleading uniform, and the city girl came right back out.  She dropped right into character for us, holding a letter jacket over her shoulder and really working with us to make some amazing pictures with the group. From a senior photographer’s perspective, Shelby was a dream to work with.
